Caerlaverock Reserve is owned by The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. A great place to see tens of thousands of Barnacle and Pink Footed Geese, Whooper swans and many species of ducks and waders in the winter..  

Port Carlisle always has a good number of rarities every year and there is a RSPB reserve at Campsfield Marsh beyond Bowness on Solway

Leighton Moss An RSPB reserve with both freshwater and saltwater. The most northerly home of Bearded Tits. Marsh Harriers, Bitterns and many freshwater species. A short drive to the marsh and you will find Avocets amongst numerous waders.

Locally, The bird life on the river is very diverse. You are also very likely to see otters. Longtown ponds have a great collection of ducks and if you want shore birds, we recommend a walk at Browhouses, Redkirk Point or Newbie along the North Solway Coast.

Dark Skies mean that star gazing is excellent on clear nights, but the observatory at Kielder is renowned for the darkest skies in England.

There are a number of Nature reserves with a great variety of fauna and flora, managed by the Cumbria and Northumberland Wildlife Trusts. Also in Dumfries and Galloway.
